Rare cabinet photograph dated 1898 and annotated on the reverse by Captain William Savile (1841-1903), to his father John Savile 4th Earl of Mexborough (1810-1899), sending him Christmas greetings. He has identified the African native group in the photograph as that of the Pondo people, a Xhosa ethnic group along the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Their territory was peacefully annexed to the Cape Colony in 1884.
