Attractive antique 19th century albumen photo of a large South African woman standing proudly with her arm on her hip dressed in tribal beads and head dress.

Social status and wealth were implied by being a larger woman. For centuries the mark of beauty for South Africa's black women, buttocks, hips and legs were the focus of fashion. It was the most admired part of a woman's figure and a sign of womanliness. Much of the dancing by women was designed to feature women's voluptuous hips and thighs.

Mounted in a modern black wooden frame under conservation glass by Pure & Applied Conservators of London.
